Hong Kong Listener Feedback

Since Barry was dismissed after 16 years as a contract employee at RTHK, several listeners have sent comments. Here are some of them.

Listener Feedback on Barry’s Dismissal from RTHK

(Readers may be aware that on May 22, 2025 I was dismissed as a three-times per week commentator on RTHK, which has been the respected government-run broadcaster in Hong Kong.  No reason was given. I have been a contract employee since 2009. It was made clear that my dismissal had nothing to do with the quality of my reporting on global economic and financial matters.  To underscore that I include here comments from listeners, with names removed.)

“I’m saddened but not shocked. Radio 3 is in disarray, especially in business/economics. Its support, staff and audience are all going in the wrong direction. You continued to set  – and exceed – the gold standard for lucid, sensible and informed commentary about ‘international economics.’ “

“You can be very proud of the excellent coverage and commentary you provided over nearly 40 years of service to RTHK, and more importantly to the peoples of Hong Kong, southern China and later, audiences all over the world. Very few broadcasters have had that kind of impact and durability on a single station or network. Bravo! You are a master of cultivating listeners.”

“I’m sorry to hear this. It’s a huge loss for RTHK and Hong Kong. You are a well-known voice here in HK.  There have been several bad things going on recently at radio 3….. It seems it is not enough anymore to be balanced and fair. There is only room now for pro-China voices. It is such a shame that RTHK, with a 95-year history, is being so badly degraded.”

“As your former editor I can say You are one of best journalists writing today.

You are the complete reporter always one step ahead in getting all the facts in well written articles.  It is Hong Kong’s loss.”

“Undoubtedly a surprise although perhaps not unexpected.  I think in a broader sense that the dismissal has little to do with you and much to do with controlling the narratives. It could be worse.  You could have been swept up by the street cleaner, etc.”

“You will be missed by many listeners.  It’s their loss. I can’t imagine there is a reason apart from clearing the old guard out.”

“I can’t help thinking that these are dark forces at work.”

Hi Barry, you are one of the reasons I tune into RTHK every morning – it’s been an absolute pleasure listening to your views on the economy, markets and more. I am very, very sad to hear the news you will not be providing regular RTHK commentary going forward.

Barry, I found your reporting on the US and world economics scene informative and entertaining. My question is why? But I guess that’s under wraps for now.

Barry, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your commentary over the years and was sorry to hear this morning that you’re leaving RTHK. I also listen to the Money Talk podcast daily and so look forward to hearing your pearls there.

Thank you, Barry, for all your insights and views on the economy. It has been a highlight to listen to you almost every Wednesday morning on Money Talk. You will be truly missed!
